HistoryThe O'Hara and Capaldi Family

The Sandpiper was built in 1970 by Budge and Cynthia O’Hara, who had come to Barbados from England, in the 1950s, spending their honeymoon on a passenger cargo ship. Budge came to be General Manager of Coral Reef Club for three years, and they loved the island and the people so much that they made this their home, having three children in Barbados and devoting their lives to the hotel business. They had two sons, Patrick and Mark, and a daughter, Karen, who spent happy childhood years growing up in these beautiful surroundings and more time in the water than out!  They went on to be educated in the UK and, one by one, returned not only to the island, but to the family business, with their spouses. There are eight grandchildren who are young adults now, making their own way in different fields.

Patrick and Mark, along with their spouses and sister Karen, run Coral Reef Club, whilst Karen also is involved at The Sandpiper. Her husband, Wayne Capaldi, and General Manager, Ken Flockhart, run The Sandpiper.

Budge died in 1995, leaving behind a tremendous legacy. The younger generation forged ahead with their ambitious plans, rebuilding much of hotel and bringing it into the 21st century, all the while preserving the personal service and family atmosphere for which the property was renowned.  With an exceptionally high rate of repeat guests the family continues to strive to maintain all that makes the property special.


Located in beautiful tropical gardens and set in the middle of a large bay on the beautiful West Coast beach, The Sandpiper is set in a pretty white sandy cove.  Just a 2 minute drive or 5 minute walk from historic Holetown with local restaurants, boutiques and supermarket.  Located in the middle of the West Coast, The Sandpiper is at most 15 minutes’ drive from all of the best restaurants and beach bars in the area.


Minimum Stay Requirements

There are minimum night requirements for stays within or overlapping the following periods:


20 December 2022 – 07 January 2023 10 nights

For guests departing on or before 27th December there is no minimum stay requirement.
Shorter stays for Luxury Plantation Suites may be requested.


01 – 28 February 2023 7 nights


22 – 29 November 2022 5 nights
21 – 28 November 2023 5 nights

Child Policy

Children are welcome year-round.  No children under 5 years of age allowed in the restaurant or lounge after 7.00 p.m. Children under 16 years cannot occupy a room alone (with the exception of communicating rooms) Children under 5 years of age are not allowed in the restaurant or lounge after 7.00 p.m.

Closure Dates

The hotel will close for annual refurbishment and staff holidays during the period 17 August – 09 October 2022 and 19 August – 30 September 2023.

Dress Code

Our dress code is elegantly casual.  At breakfast and lunch, we ask that ladies wear cover-ups in the Restaurant and gentlemen wear short sleeves and no hats.  After 7.00 p.m. gentlemen are required to wear long trousers in the Restaurant and Cocktail Lounge.   On New Year’s Eve the dress code is smart.

Room Rate Levy

There is a Government Room Rate Levy of US $17.68 (Bds. $35.00) daily.  The levy is paid locally prior to departure and appears as a nightly charge on  your account.

Cancellation Conditions Related to COVID-19

Guests who need to cancel their stay due to international travel restrictions related to Covid-19 that make their holiday not possible, can choose to either postpone their stay to alternative dates within 12 months or if no suitable dates can be agreed upon are entitled to a full refund.

Standard Cancellation Policy

We recommend that our guests take out insurance against cancellation fees which are follows:

15 December 2022 – 7 January 2023

Cancellations within 30 days of arrival a charge of 100% of the total room rate will be charged year round. In the case of early checkouts 100% of the remaining stay will be applied.

7 January 2023 – 14 December 2023

Cancellations within 30 days of arrival a charge of 50% of the total room rate will be charged year round. In the case of early checkouts 50% of the remaining stay will be applied.

Now Show Policy

No Shows 100% penalty will apply.  Therefore the remaining 50% room rate will be charged to your credit card.

Deposit Policy

For confirmation of bookings, an advance deposit of 50% of the booking is required.  This can be paid by Wire Transfer, Credit Card or International Debit Card.

COVID-19 Travel Insurance

We recommend you take out travel insurance to include COVID-19 coverage.  We will review these policies periodically and will advise in advance of any change.

COVID-19 Hotel Disclaimer

The following indemnifying paragraph is part of all guests’ reservation contract with The Sandpiper.

I acknowledge that COVID-19 is a highly contagious disease and can result in serious illness, injury and death and I accept that there is an inherent risk of exposure to COVID-19 anywhere people are, or have been, present. I further agree that, save and except for where I can prove that I have contracted COVID-19 as a result of a particular negligent act or particular negligent omission of The Sandpiper, I will release, indemnify and hold harmless The Sandpiper, and their respective parent corporations, affiliates, subsidiaries, insurers, directors, officers, employees, successors, assigns, servants, agents and representatives, against any claims and/or damages whatsoever, including legal fees relating to any infection, transmission, health condition influenced or impacted, or complication by COVID-19.

Safely arrived back in Blighty, to wintery weather, snow, hail then glorious sunshine. Never a dull moment. Russell, what a fabulous hotel you run. All boxes are ticked to give your guests, which I know are mostly returners, a relaxing and indulgent week in Barbados. Your staff are so attentive in such a subtle way. They all love their job obviously as the same staff are seen year on year. Well done the team and its boss and a huge thank you.

Bill and I wanted to write and say a big thanks to everyone at The Sandpiper for making our stay such a special experience. We last visited The Sandpiper four and a half years ago.  It was over Christmas / New Year 2016/17.  Since that time, we have been itching to get back. Well, we know why that itch remained over the years; indeed, this visit reinforced just how delightful The Sandpiper is and we now have a new itch to come back and visit again! The accommodation is ideally suited for us. The food and drink were a pleasure, and when the music played in the evening, even that much more a joy.  But what made the holiday for us was the care, professionalism and sheer warmth of The Sandpiper team. We are really so happy to write this to you, and send our thanks. Please ensure that Russell and all the team know how much impact everyone made on us. We will be back!!

Natalie and I have safely returned back to London and still can’t comprehend that we’re back. We miss our time with you all so much!

It’s hard for me to even write this email, as I can still imagine myself in The Sandpiper taking in the lovely weather, amazing hospitality and such kind and loving people around us. We are so grateful for our incredible time in Barbados and celebrating our Honeymoon with you and the team has meant so much to us. We urgently needed some rest and relaxation and the combination of your exceptional service, fantastic views and accommodation were incredible. My wife has reminded me to make special mention of the food which she has officially labelled as “the best” she has had on the island. We were also very fortunate to be present for the return of the buffet after a prolonged period. The family and inviting energy that surrounds The Sandpiper experience is certainly one that I am sure many hotels strive for and has already encouraged us to be a more permanent fixture.
